Testing & Evaluation

Have you been referred to “Psychological Testing”?

You or your medical doctor may be interested in identifying certain disorders like ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, or your medical doctor may need diagnostic clarity in order to prescribe potential psychotropic medications and to facilitate other treatment recommendations.

Types of Testing Available (ages 12+):

  • ADHD
  • Autism (*a referral from a medical provider or current mental health therapist is required)
  • General Diagnostic Testing (to receive an accurate diagnosis to inform future treatment and especially for those not making progress in current treatment)
  • Personality Testing (Including the Rorschach and Projective Testing)
  • Court-Ordered Evaluations (*a brief initial consult with attorney or legal representative representing patient’s case is required)

Dr. Steele-Wren will work with prospective clients to identify the referral question to ensure that testing can adequately address the question.

Please be advised there is a $100 non-refundable deposit to schedule testing and it will be applied toward any remaining balance once testing is completed. The only time this is refunded is when your insurance pays the full testing claims amounts. If you cancel your testing appointment at any time, the $100 deposit is not returned.

Psychological Testing

Here's What to Expect:

Here is one example: A 20-year-old is suspected to have ADHD, but in order to be prescribed stimulant medications, the referring physician will want to see data within the comprehensive report from the testing conducted by Dr. Steele-Wren.

The first stage of testing involves an hour-long clinical interview to get a more holistic view of the client and how all the pieces fit together. Then, the appropriate tests are administered and this is typically done over one or two 3- hour testing sessions depending on each case.

Then, Dr. Steele-Wren writes up an official report putting everything together, making diagnoses informed by the testing, and providing treatment recommendations. This behind the scenes process takes on average 9 to 11 hours of Dr. Steele-Wren’s time. The process always culminates in a feedback session, approximately 4 weeks from your testing administration appointment, with Dr. Steele-Wren for clients to learn about the results and to ask questions.

Compared to others providing similar services, Dr. Steele-Wren provides intensive testing and focuses on assessing patients holistically, not just for the diagnosis suspected. She wants patients to learn about themselves through the process and gain important insight versus administering a few tests only looking for ADHD, as an example. Her reports are typically 10 pages or more in order to give patients a worthwhile experience after undergoing an intensive process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Testing utilizes many different types of evaluation, such as cognitive abilities involving concentration and attention, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, personality characteristics, as well as symptom inventories to make accurate diagnoses and gain insight into many different aspects of the client that traditional intake sessions by a therapist cannot provide.

Clients seek or are referred to Psychological Testing for all kinds of reasons; from identifying ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, diagnostic clarity for physicians prescribing potential psychotropic medications, and other treatment recommendations, or even for certain types of employment.

In the majority of U.S. states, at this time, you must be a doctoral level Licensed Psychologist with proper training in psychological assessment, especially if you want to accept health insurance. However, the Arkansas Psychological Board has recently reinstated the licensure of master’s level Licensed Psychological Examiners (LPEs) who are allowed to facilitate the vast majority types of testing excluding neuropsychological testing and projective testing. Master’s level clinicians (LCSW, LPC, etc.) can utilize symptom inventories to inform their work, for example, but cannot provide full testing batteries and reports in most states, including AR. We urge you to research your testing provider and ask about their credentials, qualifications, and experience. Many providers are not formally trained to properly and adequately assess you and our practice is very concerned with how prevalent these unethical providers are in the NWA area and AR at large because of the high demand for testing services.
